The African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW) was formed in 2002 in Abuja Nigeria, primarily to promote cooperation, security, social and economic development and poverty eradication among member states through the management of water resources and provision of water supply services
The Mission of AMCOW is to provide political leadership, policy direction and advocacy in the provision, use and management of water resources for sustainable social and economic development and maintenance of African ecosystems.
AMCOW has become a Specialised commiittee for water and sanitation in the African Union
On behalf of the President of the Republic of South Africa, President Jacob Zuma and the People of South Africa, It is my pleasure as Minister of Water and Environment Affairs to humbly accept the reins of Chairmanship of AMCOW for the next two years (2009 - 2011) and committed to work together with all the partners in the sector to make AMCOW an effective vehicle for water management.
African Water Facility.
The African Water Facility is an initiative led by the African Ministers' Council on Water (AMCOW) to mobilize and apply resources for the financing of water infrastructure and water investment facilitating activities in Africa.
African Ministers' Initiative for WASH (AMIWASH).
Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Initiative (RWSSI).
The RWSSI aims at increasing coverage of safe water and basic sanitation to 80% of the rural populations in Africa by 2015. RWSSI will focus on the provision of water supply and sanitation infrastructure in rural areas, and will contribute to the achievement of the MDGs in other sectors like health, education, gender and poverty.

EU Water Initiative
European Union and the African, Caribbean and Pacific States (ACP) have agreed to establish a new Water Facility under the 10th European Development Fund (2008-2013).
